Become a Mentee!

Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day

Thank you to Verizon, the sponsor of 2007 Greater Syracuse DMD.

Disability Mentoring Day is an international event hosted by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) in collaboration with the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). Disability Mentoring Day is held on the third Wednesday of the month of October, which is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day was first held in 2001. For the first two years, this event was hosted by Enable. Jeffrey Tamburo, Project Administrator, NYS Institute for Health Transition Training, SUNY Upstate Medical University, has been the Local Coordinator of Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day since its inception.

Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day has grown to become a community-wide event. In 2003, Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day was expanded to include other community agencies. Participation by provider agencies, employers and mentees continues to increase, due to the efforts of the Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day Organizing Committee.

Onondaga County Executive Nick Pirro and City of Syracuse Mayor Matt Driscoll present Jeffrey Tamburo with a Proclamation recognizing the efforts of Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day at the 2004 Kick-Off Event

Thanks to the continued support of Enable and the other participating agencies, Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day has been recognized as an important employment opportunity for area businesses and job-seekers.

Please view some photos from the 2006 Disability Mentoring Day event when 80 mentees were hosted by 36 companies. We would also like to express our gratitude to the employers who have participated as mentors and the businesses who have supported our efforts.

In 2006, Jeffrey Tamburo was named the Disability Mentoring Day Coordinator for New York State. He continues to bring the same enthusiasm and dedication for this program to the state-wide level.

This year’s Disability Mentoring Day will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2008. It will begin with a Kick-Off event at 8:00 a.m. at Drumlin’s Country Club. We hope you will consider becoming a part of Greater Syracuse Disability Mentoring Day. For more information on Greater Syracuse DMD, please e-mail us at info@disabilitymentoringday.org.
